13,960 children in Wicklow will benefit from free GP care – Doyle

DoctorFine Gael TD for Wicklow, Andrew Doyle, has said that 13,960 children in County Wicklow will benefit from free GP care under a new family friendly measure being introduced by the Government. It was announced in Budget 2014 that free GP care will be rolled out next year for all children aged 5 and under.

Deputy Doyle said, “It is fantastic to think that 13,960 children in Wicklow will benefit from free GP care once it is rolled out next year. This will have a huge impact on thousands of families across Wicklow who will no longer have to stump up €50 every time a child has to see the doctor.”

“From next year, 240,000 children across the country will be able to visit a doctor without their parents having to worry about the cost. This will go a considerable way to easing the financial burden on young families, who are trying to stay on top of their monthly bills. And the introduction of this measure will mean 49% of the population is now covered for free GP care; the highest rate in the history of the State.”

“But this policy is about much more than just saving parents money. It will ensure better medical outcomes for children, because by going to the doctor early, they can avoid going to the hospital late. It is also in line with the Government’s policy to deliver care close to people in their community.”

“It’s important to say that this is just the first step. The Government is committed to ensuring that everyone in the country can go to the doctor without worrying about the cost. The introduction of free GP care for children aged five and under is the first phase of the introduction of Universal Health Insurance, as promised in the Programme for Government. We’re doing this so we can finally bring an end to the broken two-tier health system.”

“It is very positive that this measure is being implemented as we prepare to exit the bailout on 15th December. Exiting the bailout and regaining control of our own affairs will truly demonstrate that Ireland is on the road to recovery. And as we get there we will continue to reform and invest in our health services, for the betterment of families and communities across the County Wicklow”, concluded Deputy Doyle.
