Fine Gael TD for Wicklow/East Carlow, Andrew Doyle, has welcomed the after National Geographic Magazine named Powerscourt Gardens in Enniskerry, Wicklow as the third best gardens in the world.
Deputy Doyle said, “I am delighted that the Powerscourt Gardens has received this recognition from the National Geographic which is the blue riband of publications for all things outdoor.”
“This National Geographic award confirms that Powerscourt is a world class attraction. Only the Château de Versailles in France and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in England were listed above Powerscourt.”
“I welcome the news that President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina will plant a tree at the gardens this Saturday to mark the accolade. The National Geographic is not the only one to be impressed by Powerscourt. There has been a significant increase in the numbers signing up to become annual members of Powerscourt. Over half a million people visit the Powerscourt Estate each year, with over 209,000 visitors to the gardens in 2013.”
“Powerscourt has already received a number of top awards lows a string of other recent awards including: the Top 10 Houses in the World (Powerscourt House, Lonely Planet) and the Best Parkland Venue in Ireland 2014 Award. The National Geographic award is the icing on the cake”, concluded Deputy Doyle.
