Cross-party support for Radon Awareness Campaign in Co. Wicklow Oireachtas members meet with EPA Scientists

A group of cross-party TDs from Wicklow and East Carlow have met with representatives from the Radiological Office within the Environmental Protection Agency, in relation to their Radon Awareness Campaign, which launched this week. This is a very important campaign and is the 12th campaign of its type. This year the EPA are focusing on Wicklow, as it has been listed as a priority county, containing some of the highest levels of Radon in the country. Radon causes some 250 lung cancer deaths a year and is the highest cause of lung cancer among people after smoking. It is also the highest cause of lung cancers for those who don’t smoke. Following the cross-party meeting Minister Doyle, Minister Harris, Deputy Brady, Deputy Casey and Deputy Donnelly are joining with the EPA in calling for every home, business and public building in Wicklow to test their property for Radon levels.   Speaking at the briefing which took place in Leinster House, Mr. David Fenton, Senior Scientist in the Office of Radiological Protection said “Radon is only a problem if ignored. To test your home is a simple process. Should radon be found in your home, it is a straightforward and inexpensive problem to fix. Just because your neighbour has zero levels of Radon in their home, doesn’t mean you do too. We have huge experience of guiding people on how to rectify their radon problem and we will continue to offer that service.” Speaking at the briefing, Alison Dowdall, Senior Scientist said “A home measurement kit consists of two detectors, both the size of a biscuit. You place one in your living room and one in your bedroom. They are left there for three months and they are then sent back to us. We then carry out all the relevant tests and liaise with the homeowner should an issue be identified.” Over 2,300 homes and schools have already been tested in Co. Wicklow. Areas particularly affected by high Radon levels include Blessington, Aughrim, Avoca, Kiltegan, Manor Kilbride and Rathdrum. Speaking after the event, the group of TD’s agreed that radon is a real issue. “Some of the facts we were told today were eye opening. This isn’t about scaring the public, we want to let people know that Radon is easily detected, easily fixed and by testing your home you are helping to save your family from serious harm. You can order your home measurement kit now by visiting www.radon.ie or phoning Freephone 1800 300 600.”
