Fisheries Policy identified as one of the priorities for the Committee

Sub-group of the JC on Agriculture, Food and the Marine

At our meeting this week, the newly formed Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine discussed our work programme for the coming year. The Committee identified the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) as one of our key policy priorities. The Committee agreed to set up a sub-group of the Committee to consider issues of concern particularly within the smaller community/island fishing groups with a view to feeding into the discussions on the CFP and producing a report at a later stage.

The Committee has already commenced meetings with some of the fishing groups – representatives from the Donegal Islands Committee will be in attendance next week

Septic Tank owners can avail of low registration fee

28th June 2012.

I would encourage owners of septic tanks to avail of the low registration fee of €5 which is in place for the next 3 months. The fee increases to €50 from 28th September.

Inspections on septic tanks will commence in 2013 and it is expected that the vast majority of  systems are expected to pass the inspection without any issues.

There are almost half a million septic tanks in the country. The onus is on each owner to make sure their tank is registered. Clean water and a secure water supply is in everyone’s interest. It affects our agricultural, tourism and food sectors as well as ensuring continued high quality foreign investment into Ireland.

There are no exemptions to this and homeowners will be contacted at least 20 days in advance of any inspection.

Septic tanks owners can register in the following ways:

1. Online at

ProtectOurWater.ie,

2. By Post: Forms in City/County Councils, libraries and Citizens Information Centres or LoCall1890-800 800 for information. Cheques made Payable: ‘Protect Our Water’ and post to: Domestic Wastewater Systems Registration P.O Box 12204, D1

3. At your Local Authority Office (no admin fee)
