SPORTS GRANTS WHICH WILL ENABLE OVER OLDER PEOPLE TO GET ENGAGED IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN WICKLOW

cropped-AndrewDoyle_Ballot.jpgMinister of State for Food,  Forestry and Horticulture Andrew Doyle has welcomed the announcement that 23 Wicklow Clubs and societies will benefit in over €7,200 worth of grants to fund physical activity for older people (over 50). The Go for Life Grant Scheme from Age & Opportunity and Sport Ireland. These grants are aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of older people across the country by providing them with opportunities to engage in physical activity and sport.  Grant recipients include Active Retirement Groups, ICA guilds, Local Sports Partnerships, Sports Clubs, Family Resources Centres and many others who provide older people with opportunities to get active.

‘The National Physical Activity Plan, launched earlier this year, sets an ambitious target to get half a million people more active within ten years.  Programmes like Go for Life and the National Grant Scheme will help us reach this target by supporting and empowering older people to get active.

Karen Smyth, CEO of Age & Opportunity, outlined the importance of providing opportunities for older people to engage in sport and physical activity: “Research shows us that physical activity improves mental and physical wellbeing as well as providing opportunities for social networking.  Through our Go for Life Programme and the Grant Scheme we are helping get older people, more active, more often. Those participating in the Games are testament to the impact these grants have in local communities, empowering older people to keep fit and healthy on their own terms. The variety of groups who apply and the activities they are engaged in demonstrates the richness and variety of the ageing experience in Ireland.”

Speaking at the launch, John Treacy, Chief Executive of Sport Ireland said: “The National Grant Scheme continues to grow in importance, as demonstrated by the record number of groups who have applied this year and the record number of grants awarded.  Increasing participation in sport and physical activity is one of Sport Ireland’s key strategic priorities.  We are delighted to partner with Age & Opportunity’s Go for Life Programme, to increase participation among older people in recreational sport activities. I also want to acknowledge the groups themselves and our own national network of Local Sports Partnerships who provide opportunities to increase participation among older people in sport and physical activity”.

Minister Doyle announces grant awards for Forest Research

Minister of State of the Department, Agriculture, Food and Marine, Andrew Doyle, TD, with responsibility for forestry, welcomed today’s announcement of research grant awards approaching €2 million for collaborative inter-institutional forest research projects under the Department’s competitive forest research funding programme (CoFoRD) saying “Today’s research funding announcement will make a significant contribution to the sector, in terms of its continued competitiveness and sustainability, while also adding to forest sector research capability”.

The newly funded research projects tackle a variety of important issues for the forest sector as follows:

  • addressing the needs of private forest owners with a view to greater mobilisation of privately owned timber;
  • developing knowledge on the wood quality of Irish hardwood thinnings and identifying possible end-use applications;
  • assessing the commercial potential  of using Irish Sitka spruce to manufacture a cross-laminated timber modular flooring system;
  • assessing how forest planning and management activities can contribute to the effective conservation of Hen Harriers; and
  • developing modelling capacity to examine future scenarios for agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration by forestry in Ireland.

The content of this Call was heavily influenced by FORI, the strategic research and innovation agenda for forestry developed under the auspices of the sector-led COFORD Council Forest Research Working Group and co-ordinated by Research Division of the Department.

Minister of State Doyle, commented “I particularly welcome the forestry research awards which address a number of critical issues for the sector, including enhanced mobilisation of timber from the private sector, value added opportunities for Irish grown timber, forest management and hen harrier conservation and land-use, agriculture and carbon sequestration by forestry”.

Earlier this year, over €800,000 was awarded under the Department’s CoFoRD programme to another collaborative inter-institutional forest research project addressing, inter alia, forest genetic resources, research on potential tolerance to ash dieback disease, and horizon scanning for potential pests and diseases of Sitka spruce.

Minister Doyle concluded by adding that “Today’s research awards brings the total investment made by my Department on forest research in 2016 to over €2.7 million”.
