Colaiste Chill Mhantain first school in Co. Wicklow to get Yellow Flag
Andrew Doyle TD has congratulated Colaiste Chill Mhantain at the raising of their Yellow Flag ceremony this week and acknowledged their achievement as the first school in County Wicklow to achieve this status.
The Yellow Flag programme brings issues of interculturalism, equality and diversity into the whole-school programme. The programme recognises that schools are central to all of our communities and a place of great influence outside of the home. One of the key methodologies being that it goes beyond the school walls to engage with the community to develop a better understanding of the diversity that exists in Ireland as a whole.
“This Programme was initiated and piloted by the Irish Traveller Movement. The Programme provides a practical series of 8 steps and allows schools to apply them to the day to day running of the school. It works with students, staff, management, parents and the wider community so that issues of diversity and equality are not just for inside the classroom but can be understood and as part of everyday life.
“The Yellow Flag is an award programme like the Green Flag Programme and the presence of the Yellow Flag flying outside a school is a symbol of inclusion and interculturalism. To have the Yellow Flag flying proudly beside the Green Flag outside this new school sends a strong message and I hope more schools in Wicklow will soon follow.”
